Sing Unburied Sing by Jesmyn Ward

Sing, Unburied, SingSing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story is set in 21st century rural Mississippi. Though set during the modern day, past events very much drive the narrative. Each chapter is narrated by a different character -- the main one being a teenaged boy named Jojo. A key idea of this novel is that the manner of one's death affects his or her afterlife. Jojo's family has suffered much loss and pain, and death is very much part of their lives. From the slaughter of farm animals to the killing of a loved one, it is always around them.

My favorite part of this book is Ward's grandfather character. She contrasts his tough exterior with a gentleness and vulnerability he displays towards his grandchildren and ailing wife. He uses his physical and mental strength to help those he cares for and loves. His experience during a stint in Parchman prison during his teen years is central to the narrative.

My rating for this book is 5 out of 5 stars. I liked that the author let different characters narrate the chapters. The book moved along at a good pace and Ward's powers of description are superb. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.
